God's Incomparable Grace - Ephesians 1 & 2

God’s Incomparable Grace
Ephesians 1, 2
Because Paul has grasped the immensity of our human need, and the parallel deep,
costly and comprehensive nature of the salvation we have in Jesus Christ, he is totally
overwhelmed by the grace of God by which we are saved.
God’s grace is ‘glorious’ (1:6). That God should plan from before creation to adopt us as
his children through Jesus Christ is, Paul states, to the praise of God’s glorious grace.
Even before He created us, God knew that we would fall into sin, and that He would
send Jesus to save us. Who but a God of incredible grace would proceed with such a
project?
Grace is ‘freely given us in the One He loves’ (1:6). God’s grace is free, without cost to
us, without qualifying conditions, totally regardless of anything we are or have or do. It is
a sheer undeserved gift.
The redemption and forgiveness we have through Christ’s blood is ‘in accordance with
the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us’ (1:7, 8). How big is our redemption?
How big is our forgiveness? As big as God’s grace! Far more grace than we will ever
need has been lavished upon us. God’s complete wisdom and understanding made
sure of that.
God’s grace is incomparably rich (2:7). There is nothing like it, nothing that comes
anywhere near it in size and generosity. By this grace boasting is silenced. Only God’s
glorious, incomparable, immeasurable grace, not our goodness, has saved us (2:8).

Psalm 1

Background:
The Psalms is the book in the bible which consists of a collection of 150 poems, songs and reflections of God. They were written by many people under the influence of the Holy Spirit and also contain prophecy.

Basics:
What kind of people are described here in this psalm? What are they related to? What are the consequences for each way of life? Is this psalm clear or hard to understand?

Study Time:
The Psalm says that the man who delights in the law of the Lord is blessed. How can we “delight in the law of the Lord”?

Is it easy to be a person who “yields fruit” in today’s world? Why?

How can we better become like this description?

Psalm 1 says that the Lord watches over the paths of the righteous. Because of this – what do we have to look forward to?

Where else is this promise mentioned in the scriptures?

Tough Thinking:
How does Psalm 1 describe the “wicked” people and what does it say will happen to them?

Is this something to look forward to?

Does God want them to go down this path? Where in the bible does it say this?

Who in our lives, in our sphere of influence is living in this way?

What can we do to show them God’s love and plan for their lives?

Challenge:
Think of one or two people in your life that you want to try to meet the needs of and show God’s love to them this week. Think of a practical way you can do this. Share this with the someone who can hold you accountable and pray!

God's Word - Psalm 19

Context:
The heading of the Psalm “For the Director of Music. A Psalm of David” tells us that David wrote this Psalm and that it was committed to the Master of the service of song in the sanctuary for the use of those who came to worship. There are two things the Psalmist draws our attention to. In verses 1-6, he draws our attention to the majesty and power of God in creation. Then from verses 7-11, we are drawn to the testimony of the word of God setting forth its diving purpose and usefulness in respect to humanity. In verses 12-14 we have the psalmists response to the consideration of both the world and the Word.

What does the Psalmist call God’s word and how is it described?

What does it say about the importance of knowing God’s word?

What are the benefits of God’s word in your life according to these verses?

How to get into God’s word

Hear: Romans 10:17
What are some avenues in which you can hear God’s word?

Read: Revelation 1:3
What are some different ways of reading the Bible?

Study: Acts 17:11
What is the difference between hearing and studying?

Memorise: Psalm 119:9-11
Why is it important to memorise the word?

Meditate: Psalm 119: 97-99
What does it mean to meditate on God’s word?

Which of the five ways of getting into God’s word do you find the easiest? Which would be the hardest? Why?

What can you do to get into the word more?

Digging Deeper
Read through Psalm 119 and think about what it says about God’s word. How is it described and what are the benefits for your life?
